Gliss Patch Notes 5
Firmware v2, Gliss 1U: Slider and Touch
The release of Gliss Firmware v2 opens up a new range of possibilities for performance and control in your Eurorack system. If you already own a Gliss, you can install the firmware for free here with our easy-to-use installer, and all new Gliss modules ship with the firmware already installed. The forthcoming episodes of Patch Notes will show you how to make the most of the new features, two of which we’ll be looking at in this video. They will also make use of our new 1U faceplate. This allows all Gliss users to convert their module to the 1U format, and is available now from the Bela Shop.
First we have a new configuration for the Touch Strip called Slider + Touch, which provides a combination of a finger-sized, touch-sensitive button and a longer continuous strip for recording the movement of your finger. Second, we now have the ability to record what we call “discrete gestures” at any time in Record Mode. Previously, the length of a recorded gesture was determined by how long you had your finger on the Touch Strip. Once your finger left the Touch Strip, the recording began to loop. Now we can enable recording with the Button, which then allows us to take our fingers on and off the Touch Strip without stopping the recording. This has big implications: rather than being limited to continuous motions, now we can create control signals that jump from one value to another, or generate the on-off signals typifying triggers and gates.
To show both these features in action, we’ll use the small pad section of the Slider + Touch configuration to trigger envelopes and advance sequencers controlling timbral parameters throughout the system. This is only possible with the ability to record gestures discreetly: to create a pattern of gates, we need to be able to take our finger on and off the Touch Strip without stopping the recording. Meanwhile, the remaining portion is available to create sweeping movements by tracking and recording the position of our fingers.
